Fats in the Diet of People with Diabetes
Guidance on types of fats, label reading, and portion control for people with diabetes.

Fats remain an integral part of the diet for individuals with diabetes. The focus is not only on total fat intake but also on the type of fat, accompanying foods, and the dishes they replace in the diet.
Distinguishing the main categories
Unsaturated fats are found in various nuts, seeds, fish, tofu, avocados, and vegetable oils. Saturated fats are abundant in animal fats, butter, certain full-fat dairy products, and many processed foods. Industrial trans fats should be limited according to health recommendations.
Prioritize substitution rather than mere addition
Adding seeds, nut butters, or oils to an existing diet can significantly increase total energy intake. A more strategic approach is to replace some saturated fat sources with unsaturated fats while maintaining appropriate portion sizes.
Read labels in order.
- Identify the serving size used by the manufacturer for calculation.
- Compare with the actual amount to be consumed.
- Review total fat and saturated fat content.
- Check energy, sodium, carbohydrates, and added sugars.
- Read the ingredient list to identify fat sources.
Are nuts and nut butters always suitable?
These can be options in the diet if there are no allergies, but dosage remains important. Nut butters may contain added sugar, salt, or oil; ‘natural’ products do not imply unlimited use.
Do not assess fats in isolation
Cardiovascular risk in diabetic individuals is influenced by multiple factors such as blood glucose, blood pressure, blood lipids, smoking, physical activity, and weight. Changing one oil or adding one type of nut does not replace a comprehensive treatment plan.
Who requires a personalized plan?
Individuals with cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, liver disease, lipid disorders, pancreatic conditions, or those requiring weight management should consult with physicians and nutrition experts. Avoid self-prescribing very high-fat diets based on online trends.
